VISIT OF PROFESSOR LIANNE HOOGEVEEN, FROM THE
NETHERLANDS
Title: Individualized inclusion: Utopia or
the Best of both Worlds? Education has always played an important
role in the development of countries (Green, 2013), but the goal of education
has changed over time, from drill and memorization of words, sentences, and
facts in the 17th and 18th century , via 19th century European nationalism –
education has the power to shape the future of nations as well as individuals-,
to present education. Today, Europeans acknowledge that education is a
fundamental right for everyone, which means that every European country should
develop the most appropriate education in relation to the needs of all students
and enable all students to develop their potential to the fullest (Eurydice,
2006, 2014). In 1994, the Council of Europe highlighted the special educational
needs of students with exceptional potential, stating that gifted children
should be able to benefit from appropriate educational conditions that would
allow them to develop their abilities fully. The challenge is: how can we do
that, taking our wish to inclusion in account? That’s where this presentation
is about: how can we meet the educational needs of students with exceptional
potential without being unfair to the other students.
